Ginseng root extract (Panax ginseng)
Ginseng is certainly the most prominent Chinese medical plant. Its root is shaped like a human body. Its therapeutical properties have been used in Asia for thousands of years as a prophylactic and restorative agent for enhancement of mental and physical capacities in cases of exhaustion, loss of concentration and during convalescence.
In the alternative medical literature, Ginseng is generally termed as adaptogen: having the potential to increase the body's own resistance to various stress factors and to stimulate the immune response. Ginseng helps stabilize physical and psychological functions and build up general vitality. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used in the treatment of diabetes, impotence, prevention of hepatotoxicity and gastrointestinal disorder.
Ginkgo leaf extract (Ginkgo biloba)
Originating in China some hundred million years ago, this living fossil can live to an age of 1000 years. Due to its extraordinary resistance towards extreme environmental conditions Ginkgo is also called the “tree of life”. A Ginkgo tree in a Hiroshima temple was the first plant to bud again and survive after the nuclear catastrophe.
Extracts from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries in the treatment of asthma, rhinitis and bronchitis. Scientific investigations demonstrate the strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiallergenic properties. Clinical data has proven enhancement of blood flow memory, concentration and learning. Thus it is used successfully for the treatment of cerebrovascular insufficiency, occlusive vascular diseases and inner ear disorders such as tinnitus and vertigo.
Green tea extract (Camellia sinensis)
Tea has conquered the world to become the most popular beverage after water, well ahead of coffee, beer, wine and soft drinks.
Green tea has stimulating, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which help to protect cells and tissues against free oxygen radicals. Traditionally high consumption of green tea in wide parts of Asia has been linked to statistically lower rates of heart attacks and cancer. Studies prove this positive effect and demonstrate the increased resistance to viral infections and liver diseases as well as the prevention of arteriosclerosis.
Guaraná extract (Paullinia cupana)
Amazonian Indians traditionally used a paste made from the dried seeds of this vine to invigorate themselves during hunting expeditions.
Unlike its more common synthetic counterpart, caffeine (formerly termed Guaranin) from Guaraná is ingested slowly by the body. It helps to sharpen the perception and enhance concentration. It also has a stabilizing effect on blood flow and is widely used in Brazil to strengthen potency and enhance libido.
Artichoke bud extract (Cynara scolymus)
The juice of the artichoke plant has been used since ancient Greek to ease liver complaints.
Widely rumoured to alleviate symptoms connected to excessive alcohol consumption, the artichoke in fact enhances the production and flow of bile fluids and protects the liver while supporting its function. Artichoke can lower blood lipid levels and is therefore used for prevention of vascular diseases.
Magnesium
Magnesium is necessary for the proper function of muscles (including the heart muscle) and of the nervous system.
It is essential for the use of energy, for electrolyte balance and to build healthy bones and teeth. Intense physical activity (such as sports and clubbing) and consumption of alcohol increase the renal clearance of water and magnesium that can cause hangover symptoms. Low blood magnesium levels can contribute to states of nervous irritability and depression and can cause cardiac arrhythmias, muscular cramps and shivering. The supply of magnesium helps to relax muscles, to elevate mood and support concentration.
Zinc
Zinc is necessary for the function of the immune system and to build and maintain strong bones and maintain them. It is needed for cell division, necessary for cell protection from free radicals and is commonly used to enhance the resistance to influenza and a common cold.
Zinc deficiency often leads to an unhealthy appearance of skin, hair and nails. Poor, sporadic nutrition or regular consumption of alcohol can decrease Zinc levels in the liver, resulting in possible damage of this organ.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
Niacin helps to release energy from foods and to keep the nervous system functioning. It is needed for normal mental function and helps keep skin and mucous membranes healthy.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxin)
Pyridoxin is needed for muscle function to release energy from carbohydrates stored in muscle. It is necessary for the body to use protein, important for the function of the nervous system and for the immune system, because it strengthens your nerves and helps you to withstand stress. Furthermore Vitamin B6 contributes to the maintenance of normal blood homocysteine levels and helps the body to handle iron.
Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid)
Folic acid is essential for healthy blood, blood formation and cell division. It helps to maintain normal blood homocysteine levels, keeps blood vessels healthy and contributes to the natural growth of cells.
Fructose
Fructose is the sweetest naturally occurring sugar, estimated to be twice as sweet as sucrose. Thus it is sufficient to use less for the same effect. It is found in honey and sweet fruits. After the consumption of fructose blood sugar levels rise much slower than through sucrose. Because of its insulin independent metabolism, fructose is often recommended for, and consumed by, people with diabetes mellitus. Investigations show that fructose can help to accelerate the elimination of alcohol from blood and breath.
